Masterplan
For Mati, Greece
Fall 2023
Working with ten classmates under the instruction of Michael Lykoudis, my fifth-year studio revisited a Masterplan for Mati, Greece that was begun in 2019.
Mati was tragically burned by a wildfire in 2018, wiping out many structures and taking many lives with it. Our studio wanted to envision a long-term future for the reconstruction of Mati, a coastal bedroom community of Athens.
Our primary objectives were to create a self-sustainable, livable town, create identity of place, and improve resiliency with climate change in mind. It was crucial that we maintained the existing character while improving the language of the architecture for a more beautiful town with a true identity of place. We worked to improve connectivity and access throughout the town and beyond for greater safety. We focused on several key public spaces and their role in the community, culminating with the town center on the coastline.
Our travels together to Athens, Mati, Nafplio, and Spetses contributed greatly to the decisions we made for the master plan, including important studies of Greek vernacular language and coastal places.
